Tags
Tags in WordPress are a taxonomy system that allows you to classify and organise your content with keyword-based labels. Unlike categories which typically represent broad topics, tags are more specific and detailed descriptors that highlight key elements within your posts. Tags are non-hierarchical, meaning they exist independently without parent-child relationships, making them ideal for precise content labeling.
Tags serve multiple purposes, including improving navigation by allowing visitors to find related content through tag clouds or links, and enhancing search engine optimisation (SEO) by highlighting relevant keywords and creating additional entry points. When used effectively, tags create connections between seemingly unrelated posts that share common elements.
Creating a Tag
Creating effective tags involves thinking about what keywords readers might use when searching for content like yours. Choose specific, relevant terms that accurately describe key aspects of your content. Remember that tags can be reused across multiple posts to create connections between related content throughout your website. Avoid excessive tagging (which can create clutter), and select specific, relevant terms that accurately reflect the content in question. By default, the amount of tags that a website can feature is scaled with the amount of content on the website. Additionally, if an existing tag is matched verbatim in the content of your post, the tag will automatically be selected upon publication.
There are two ways to create tags in WordPress, giving you flexibility in how you manage your content organisation.
