WordPress Blocks

Blocks are the fundamental building units in WordPress.

If you are familiar with Drupal's fields and widgets, blocks in WordPress serve a similar purpose, only with a more visual interface. All content on WordPress thus consists of one or more discrete blocks, e.g. paragraphs, images, headings, tables, and more. Any block can be moved, edited, and styled independently. Additionally, most blocks can be combined and nested, creating customised end-user experiences.

The CERN WordPress Theme comes with many blocks, including:

  • Content blocks: Paragraphs, headings, lists, quotes, ...
  • Media blocks: Images, galleries, videos, audio, ...
  • Layout blocks: Columns, groups, rows, ...
  • Widget blocks: Calendar, latest posts, social icons, ...
  • Embeds: YouTube, Twitter, Spotify, ...

The blocks included by default allow you to create everything that was possible to create in Drupal and more.

As WordPress at CERN continues to mature, more blocks and integrations will be introduced. All blocks included in the CERN WordPress Theme guarantee responsiveness and conform to both accessibility and design guidelines. While individual blocks may appear simple, combining multiple blocks quickly allows you to develop customised and visually pleasing websites.
